Delaware State University, donors step up to replace stolen historical lynching marker

When Savannah Shepherd found out the historical marker in New Castle County's Greenbank Park, commemorating the 1903 lynching of black farm worker George White, was stolen, the news came as a surprise.

And a letdown.

Shepherd, a rising senior at Sanford School in Hockessin, had worked with Sen. Darius Brown, D-Wilmington, to get the marker installed just weeks earlier in June.

"I was very, very shocked," Shepherd said this week. "I wanted people to be educated and to look deeper into our past, to have a better understanding of it."

She won't have to wait long to revive that mission.
