February outlook: Expect seasonably cold air while D.C.'s snowiest month may look the part.
It could be our snowiest February in six years.
'This winter has been fairly lackluster to date in D.C. and quite similar to last, with warmer than normal temperatures and next to no snowfall. Despite the underwhelming season thus far, some key meteorological features becoming established in the Northern Hemisphere atmosphere may portend a different story in February.
We’re forecasting near normal temperatures in February, with near to above average precipitation along with near average snowfall. For temperatures, that means an average temperature in the 37 to 41 degree range with highs in the 40s and lows mostly in the 20s and 30s. Apropos to total precipitation, about 2.5 to 3 inches of liquid — although some of it may come down as snow.
D.C.’s average February snowfall is 5.7 inches, the snowiest of the calendar months; our thinking suggests snowfall in the 4- to 7-inch range. This could be conservative depending on how much snow the storm early next week delivers.
The last time we matched or exceeded our 30-year average during the month was six years ago in February 2015, when we picked up 9.8 inches.'>>>
