James H. Nance, the colorful Melbourne-based attorney who played an integral role in a landmark tobacco lawsuit filed by the state of Florida against major tobacco companies, died Sunday.

Nance — whose website bio still prominently mentions his childhood nickname that stuck, "Booty" — was 90.

His influence on the Space Coast was deep and far-reaching: Between 1997 and 2012 alone, Nance donated more than $1 million to local charities and organizations, ranging from local law enforcement agencies to hospitals to youth sports leagues.
