'He's only a boy': Man protecting his baby fatally shot in Florida restaurant

Tourist Dustin Wakefield, 21, was having dinner with his family in Miami Beach when a gunman randomly killed him.

MIAMI BEACH — A gunman fatally shot a tourist eating dinner with his family at a Miami Beach restaurant as the man protected his 1-year-old son, police and a family member said.

Tamarius Blair David Jr., 22, of Norcross, Georgia, told investigators he shot Dustin Wakefield, 21, on Tuesday night because he “was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” according to his arrest report.

David allegedly told police he entered La Cerveceria restaurant just before 6:30 p.m. and randomly decided to shoot Wakefield, who was on vacation from Castle Rock, Colorado.

Mike Wakefield, the victim’s uncle, told the Miami Herald that Dustin Wakefield died protecting his young son.

I think life in prison is the least he should get.

Throw the book at him. Utterly horrific.

The gun culture in this country is the nightmare that never ends. I can only hope today's young people will change things for the better, probably long after I'm dead and gone.

'empowered' to do what? defend your 'castle' (as dubious as that might sound to some) - or shoot a random stranger in a dining room?

of course both of us probably make a mistake - in try to impute any kind of meaning or rationale to the utterances of this human vegetable. 'empowered' is probably just a big word he's proud to have learned recently.

I would say something about the whole gun issue here, but... never mind. After the Connecticut massacre of young children, I give up.

you can bet that this murder will be aired on EVERY TV station and will be on EVERY major news site and newspaper in Europe and around the world. If you think for one nanosecond this helps our image or our (national and/or Florida) tourism....I'd like to have what you're smoking.

My sincerest condoloences to his family. Just horrible.
