Fort Lauderdale's Ben Sorensen to run for Congress

(Sun Sentinel) FORT LAUDERDALE — There’s one more candidate entering the race for Congress: Ben Sorensen, Vice Mayor of Fort Lauderdale. Sorensen, a Democrat, announced Wednesday that he plans to run for the District 22 seat that’s been held by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch since 2010. Deutch will take over as CEO of the American Jewish Committee in October and won’t be seeking reelection.

“As a local elected official, military intelligence officer, small business owner and former teacher, I have a unique perspective and ability to best represent the people of my district,” Sorensen said.

Jared Moskowitz, a Broward County commissioner who formerly headed the state emergency management agency, announced his candidacy on March 4 for the Democratic primary — four days after Deutch said he was leaving Congress. Several other names have popped up as potential candidates, including Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. In early March, Trantalis said he was considering running for the seat but had changed his mind by March 21, when he told reporters he’s decided to stay on as mayor. Under the state’s resign-to-run law, Sorensen will be forced to step down from his commission seat, triggering a special election. On Wednesday, he said he has not yet decided when he will resign.

The Democratic and Republican primaries will be held on Aug. 23. The general election is on Nov. 8. Sorensen says he plans to bring a grassroots approach to his campaign. For several months in the summer and fall of 2018, he moved his commission office to a homelessness encampment to better understand the issue of homelessness and lack of affordable housing.
