Mica blasts spending on Sanford public housing
An angry Congressman John Mica said Monday that he is outraged that the Sanford Housing Authority expects to spend nearly $1 million this year on operating expenses when only six families are living in public-housing run by the authority.
"This is crazy," Mica, R-Winter Park, said during a meeting in Sanford with local and federal housing officials. "I could put people in the Ritz-Carlton for that amount of money…I am not a happy camper."
Mica also said he opposes building new public housing complexes at the Sanford sites, where two housing units already have been demolished and four more are scheduled for the wrecking ball this year.
Instead, Mica said, he would rather offer vouchers to needy families to help them pay rent at apartment complexes or homes elsewhere and turn over the vacant properties run by the housing authority to private development.
