Related: About this forumCan someone recommend a home insurance company?
When I first purchased my home about 5 years ago, the insurance was about $1,000. They have raised the rates every year and now they want $2,500. (The value of my home has increased by about 20K since then. Has anyone else seen their rates increase like this? If anyone can recommend companies to get quotes from, I would appreciate it.

I have Tower Hill insurance. Seems like relatively decent coverage and they haven't raised my premium over the past 3 years.

(16,296 posts)We survived 3 hurricanes in our previous house with little damage except for a few loose shingles. Then the insurance company "offered" a WMI . And when I say "offered", it was more like - have it done or get another insurance company. A husband and wife team came in, crawled around in our attic and left without saying a word. A few weeks later we got a letter stating our rate was going from $1,200 a year to $3,600. The reason-the company felt that our roof did not have adequate enough straps from the roof to the supporting walls. We did have straps, the type used in construction, but not the over-sized ones the insurance company was now demanding. When we bitched the reply was "Tough-get another company".

(1 post)Six months ago I had to pay $200 for an inspection before getting insured. The premium here in Florida was $2100. They rated my house mostly masonry which it is 2/3. The smaller second floor is wood. After six months they changed their minds and called it all wood and asked for $600 more dollars. I told them to cancel policy and they still charged me retro for increase. I have not had a claim to home insurance for 30 years, but have likely paid $50,000 in premiums. Screw them!

(2 posts)Try Security First. Top rated and well respected. Low premiums. Also, raise your deductible to the highest level you can tolerate.
