Florida girl forced to be a 'bride' at 13

FORT MYERS - Last summer, a soft-spoken young woman came to lawyer Toni Latino for help. The father of her 5-year-old daughter had filed for custody rights. She wanted to fight it.

I read the article at the link and I don't doubt it is true but I'm asking myself how
could this happen. The couple lived in the girl's house, with her parents, for six
years. She kept attending public school while raising the baby. And no one saw
any reason to intervene here. If there were any reports of marijuana possession
at this residence the law would have been all over the place.
