Public memorial service for Zell Miller, who died last week

ATLANTA -- A public memorial service will be held for late former Georgia Gov. Zell Miller, who also served as a U.S. senator.

The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in Young Harris, Georgia, where Miller died last week at the age of 86. Speakers at the service are to include Miller's former campaign consultant Paul Begala and former chief of staff Steve Wrigley.

A celebration of life service is scheduled Tuesday at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Miller will then lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda for the remainder of the day.

He will be honored Wednesday with an executive state funeral service presided by Gov. Nathan Deal.

We expect the service today to be packed, and traffic a nightmare. There is only one east-west highway (two-lane) and the college staddles it. This is rural, mountain country so there is no easy way around. If there is a procession to Atlanta, the misery will be spread.

The interesting part of this is that the service will be at Young Harris College. When Zell left politics he announced that he would be returning to the college to teach, apparently without discussing it first with the school. The faculty raised such a ruckus that he was forced to back down with much public embarrassment. I enjoyed seeing the arrogant, entitled jerk get a slap upside the head.
