Breastfeeding bill passes Idaho Senate unanimously

BOISE — A bill to protect breastfeeding mothers from indecent exposure and obscenity laws has been sent to the governor’s desk.

The Senate passed HB 448 with a 35-0 vote Monday; the measure also passed unanimously in the House. Sen. Lori Den Hartog, a Republican from Meridian, carried the bill on the floor.

HB 448, brought by Rep. Paul Amador of Coeur d’Alene, would exempt breastfeeding mothers from indecent exposure and obscenity laws. Idaho is the only state in the U.S. that does not have laws specifically allowing women to breastfeed in any place that they’re allowed to be.

This isn’t the first time a bill to protect breastfeeding mothers has come up in the Legislature: a similar measure was shot down in 2003. One lawmaker at the time said he worried such a law would encourage women to “whip it out and do it anywhere.”
