Security ushers Emanuel away as Dyett protesters take to stage at budget hearing
Mayor Rahm Emanuel had to be ushered off by his security detail during a public hearing on the city budget Wednesday night after protesters trying to keep a South Side high school open took to the stage.
The disruption forced an early end to the meeting that drew about 500 people to the South Shore Cultural Center. About an hour into the hearing, Emanuel was asked by several members of the crowd what he was going to do about Dyett High School in Washington Park, which the city had planned to close. The mayor did not answer repeated questions on the issue.
A Dyett supporter who had spoken on the issue told Emanuel: "We need a resolution right now."

As protesters chanted "Right now," a man walked onto the temporary stage and waved a flier featuring the faces of 12 people who say they are on a hunger strike to save the school. Emanuel got up from his chair and walked over to the moderator. Security stood between the mayor and the protester.
