Portland's minimum-wage workers got an 11-cent raise last week

Portland’s full-time minimum-wage workers just received a raise of $220 a year.

On July 1, the minimum wage within city limits jumped up to $11.11, an 11-cent increase over the previous level of $11.00 per hour, which has been the statewide minimum wage since Jan. 1.

The citywide hike is the result of an ordinance the Portland City Council approved in July 2015 to raise the municipal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, and peg annual increases to the consumer price index.

At the time, the state minimum wage was $7.50, but the gap between the state and city minimum wages has narrowed since Maine voters approved a statewide minimum wage increase in 2016 that has brought the wage level up to $11 per hour this year. The statewide minimum wage will continue increasing every January.

The current $11.11 wage was determined by adding the CPI increase in 2018 (1.9 percent) to $10.90, Portland’s minimum wage level that took effect July 1, 2018.

The cost of living in Portland is nearly comparable to living in Boston.

Actually for those who are not aware,... the entire State of Maine was at one time part and parcel to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our old time laws and common law are derivative of the Courts of the Commonwealth of the Kings Grant of the (British)colonial territory of Massachusetts.

.... is why we celebrate the Fourth of July.
(We told the monarchy,.. very diplomatically and politely to stuff the decrees of the royal crown up.... how you say,.. that dark passage where the sun don't shine. They seemed to have gotten the message.)

I've never been one to sit idly and I'm always trying to learn and acquire knowledge about a lot of subjects--I blame it on the liberal arts education that I earned along with the engrained values that equality and justice benefits everyone. At times I refer to it as the 21st century jack of all trades, master of none.

Truthfully, if I see an article that interests me then I try to share it on DU because I know others also share in the passion for learning. It's my contribution to society and I do appreciate feeling useful.

I want to believe that this place is about more than infighting. I think that all of us have more in common than we imagine even when there is disagreement.

I have also nominated you at the State of Maine Chamber of Commerce to be an honorary full-fledged MAINAH.

A shipment of 100 lobsters should arrive on your doorstep within a couple of days. That is one on the perks and bennies of being a Mainah.

The only one that gets to eat lobster at my apartment is the cat. She gets the new "Rockin' Lobster" brand of Temptations. If I'm in the mood, I get Rock Lobster from the B52s.
