Lawmaker rallies support to overturn LePage estate tax cut for millionaires

State Rep. Ben Collings of Portland wants to repeal the LePage era tax cuts for Maine’s most wealthy households by taxing estates worth more than $2 million.

Former Governor Paul LePage and Republican lawmakers raised the estate tax threshold from $1 million to $5.6 million for individuals, or $11.2 million for married couples.

Since winning majorities in both the Maine House and Senate, along with winning the governor’s office, Democrats have for the most part left intact LePage’s legacy of cuts.

Calling on Democrats

To pressure his caucus into action, Collings is enlisting Mainers to call on their representatives to take a bold stance on tax fairness and fund critical needs like healthcare, schools, social services and infrastructure.

Don't take away the money from the wealthy, they need more badly! You want them to support the commons? What would Ayn Rand say about that?

Oh, they are not wealth addicts, nor are they greedy or selfish. They're just hard working, self-made Americans who are full deserving with the right to make a stash and grow it.

Everyone knows in our capitalist culture that acquiring more money and assets is not only fair, it is necessary in order to acquire more of them and in copious amounts. Think of what a letdown it would be to have such entitlement interfered with like that all for silly things for useless eaters. It is a travesty, I tell you. How can they eventually own everything when you impede their rights?

2. And besides taking the tax break away from the wealthy, they should tax the lawmakers that passed...

this travesty of a tax bill, who previously dumped the responsibility of raising the shortfall in tax revenues on the remaining lower income Maine taxpayers.

I think other taxpayers left holding the bill (shortfall in tax revenues) would never agree to a tax policy if this had come up for a public vote, e.g.: "Hey, we're cutting taxes for these Fat Cats over here, do you mind?".

Those that voted for such a bill should never be allowed to run for office within the state or outside the state ever, being that they didn't represent the vast majority of voters thus, they lose their right to represent the voters.
