PGCPS students praise decision to add financial literacy as graduation requirement.

'The class of 2024 will be the first required to pass a financial literacy course in order to graduate.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Plans are in motion to bring a financial literacy course to all public schools in Prince George’s County. The 2024 class will be the first required to pass the course in order to graduate.

If there was ever a time to understand how your money works, the lack thereof, or when you owe it, it is now. The impact of COVID-19 on the economy has taught a lot of lessons, which some people have had to learn the hard way. School board members want students to be prepared. Some students want it, too.

"I've been on the board a while, and I've never seen a group of students ask for a graduation requirement," Vice Chair Edward Burroughs III said.

Burroughs and Student Board Member Joshua Omolola sponsored a bill that would require all public high school students to take a financial literacy course that would become a graduation requirement in years to come. In April, the bill passed with flying colors.'>>>

Requirement. I don’t know if that’s not required nowadays or it’s just so poorly taught.

It was just a half year class. I knew most of the stuff already, I guess from History teachers or maybe grade school. Back then you got shuffled into groups early on in grade school where you had the same teacher all day. It wasn’t till junior high that we started rotating to specialized classes. I guess I got established into the smart class. It was kind of a small school and each grade had 3 classes. I never even thought about the situation. To graduate HS everyone had to take 1/2 year of Civics and for some reason I missed my usual class and had to take it with the “dumb” kids. What I discovered was the “dumb” kids were mostly the poor kids and most of them were plenty smart they just came from families that put no emphasis on education. Fortunately my parents did even though we were poor. Thinking back now I’d bet few of those kids grew up to be RWers. We were all white by the way. I think most of the Trumpers choose to be ignorant and have had it better than average and have some sense of entitlement.
