Congressman's Response - USPS

Brooklyn, Maryland 21225

Dear (qwlauren35):

I am writing in response to your recent communication regarding the U.S. Postal Service. We are in full agreement: we must do everything we can to protect this vital service and lifeline for all Americans.

I have heard from scores of constituents who have not received their paychecks, medications and other critical deliveries over the last several weeks, when we have all been relying on USPS more than ever amid the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve made trips to post offices in our district to listen to both customers and employees. I’ve also met with the Baltimore Postmaster and leadership from the local postal union.

While Postmaster General Louis DeJoy agreed to temporarily pause his outrageous policy changes, such as ending overtime and taking mail processing machines offline, we must undo the damage. That’s why I proudly cosponsored and voted for the Delivering for America Act (H.R. 8015), which recently passed the House floor with bipartisan support. This critical bill reverses operational changes implemented by the Postmaster General. It also provides USPS with $25 billion in emergency funding and requires all election mail to be treated as first-class. You can read more about the bill here.

In addition to supporting financial support for USPS in previous COVID-19 relief packages, I’ve also called for an inspector general investigation into the President’s influence over the postal service as we head to November and millions of Americans will rely on USPS to mail in their ballots. I also called for DeJoy – a major fundraiser for President Trump who is the first postmaster general in decades without postal experience – to testify before Congress.

I will keep you updated on this issue as it evolves. To stay current on issues that are facing Congress and your community, please sign up for my e-Newsletter at dutch.house.gov and follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
