WASHINGTON, DC — A man died after being struck by a Metro train at the NoMa-Gallaudet station Sunday afternoon, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

At approximately 1:47 p.m. Sunday, Metro's rail operations control center received a report of a person struck by a train at NoMa-Gallaudet Station. Metro police and DC Fire & EMS responded to the scene. ... "It appears based on review of station video that the adult male intentionally placed himself in the path of the train," Metro said in a statement.

DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and confirmed the man was dead. Metro police remained on the scene to continue the investigation. ... Dave Statter of STATter 911 reported Monday that the man's body became energized and caught fire during efforts to remove his remains.

Metro told Statter that the man's body "was pinned under the train in such a way that the train needed to be moved to allow for removal." Moving the train meant restoring power to the third rail, which ended up causing the man's body to become energized and start to smolder, according to Statter.
