Covid cases creeping up in Maryland again
We were at a low of 36 new cases on June 28 with a 7-day average of 56 cases. A few weeks later, we're at 178 new cases yesterday, and a 7-day average of 119 cases.
The curve is headed in the wrong direction, although I should point out that those numbers are still very low. In the percentage-based world of media fearmongering, you could correctly say that cases have gone up 394% in just over two weeks! Which is true.
But 178 cases is also a 95% decrease from Maryland's all-time high of 3,796 new daily cases on Dec 4, 2020 -- the pre-vaccine days.
It's not really a surprise that cases are ticking back up again, since the state has lifted all restrictions and lots of people who didn't get vaccinated have decided that it's all over and they're safe (wrong). But the vaccines are clearly working, if you look at the very low rate of growth in new cases since vaccines were introduced and the number of vaccinations. Maryland currently has 58% of all citizens fully vaccinated, 63% with one dose. New Covid cases are occurring almost entirely in the unvaccinated population.
We shall have to see how these numbers change over time, particularly as we get back to fall and winter, but they will likely continue to go up for unvaccinated people. Hopefully vaccines will be introduced for under-12s by the end of the year.
