'You deserve debates.

Ellen,

As a single mom, I wasn’t thinking everyday about whether I had a voice in politics. I was thinking about the basics -- putting food on the table, getting my bills paid, and how to make it to my son’s daycare to pick him up on time.
But, you know what? I needed a voice in the political system. And you do, too.

That starts with knowing what the people who want to represent you stand for. You deserve to know how your next Senator will tackle the issues that you face every day. Like how to pay off your mortgage because your home’s value still has not recovered from the housing crash. Or how to refinance the student loans that were supposed to be a launchpad to success, and have instead become an anchor. Or how your next Senator will address the systemic inequality that leaves our sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, and families behind.

To make sure you have that opportunity, I challenged my opponent to a series of at least 6 debates. I want the debates to be substantial, in different parts of the state, and I want everyone to have a chance to see them. The challenge ensures you get to hear from both of us directly, not through the filter of a TV clip or small quote.

If you agree all Marylanders deserve a full and open debate, please read my debate challenge and add your name to join the call.

Holding a full and open set of debates could not be more important. Our state and our country is in crisis, the top 1% keeps gaining more and more power -- and along with it influence over the levels of government, media, and industry -- while real families are struggling just trying to get by.

If we allow those with money, those with power, to set the parameters of this debate, we know they will bend them towards the establishment. This is a time for us to stand up and make sure everyday Marylanders get the full debate they deserve, not the one the establishment chooses for them.

Senator Barbara Mikulski is retiring. We owe it to her legacy to pursue a level of spirited discourse that raises expectations, and challenges each of us to stand before the voters and discuss our ideas.

I’m ready to debate and discuss the big issues facing Maryland and this country. Anyone hoping for the privilege to be your next Senator should agree to do the same.'

Thank you,

Donna
