PARTY LINES: Mass. GOP blasts medical marijuana license process

http://www.tauntongazette.com/article/20140118/NEWS/140118637

An October 2010 file photo shows a marijuana plant flourishing under grow lights at a warehouse in Denver. It took 50 years for American attitudes about marijuana to zigzag from the paranoia of "Reefer Madness" to the excesses of Woodstock back to the hard line of Just Say No. And now, in just a few short years, public opinion has shifted so dramatically toward pragmatic acceptance of marijuana that even those who champion legalization are surprised at how quickly attitudes are changing and states are moving to approve the drug for medical use and just for fun.

PARTY LINES: Mass. GOP blasts medical marijuana license process

The Massachusetts Republican Party this past week called for a new independent commission to oversee the medical marijuana licensure process.

The GOP, in a press release criticized state Department of Public Health Commissioner Cheryl Bartlett is too close to some of the marijuana dispensary applicants, including former U.S. Rep. William Delahunt.

Delahunt has submitted applications for dispensaries in Taunton, Plymouth and Mashpee.

The DPH will license up to 35 medical marijuana dispensaries statewide, with at least one per county. The law doesn't permit more than five per county.
