Education commissioner to give OK to virtual school

The state's education commissioner will give the OK for a new public virtual school to open in the region.

But Commissioner Mitchell Chester's recommendation to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to grant a license to the proposed TEC Connections Academy will come with a few conditions.

The online school, which is backed by The Education Cooperative, a regional collaborative that includes several districts from MetroWest, would have to dial down its projected maximum enrollment from 6,000 students to 2,000 and lower its tuition from $7,000 to $6,700. Chester is also advising the board to give TEC a three-year initial certificate to run the virtual school, two years fewer than the organization asked for.

Other conditions would be that the school must create programs for special education students and English language learners; submit specific and measurable achievement and college readiness goals; and align its curriculum to the state's framework.

adequately prepared my daughter for Spanish III at the High School. She took it between her freshman and sophomore years. She received an A last semester in Spanish III so it worked in her case. She also took high school Biology from the North Dakota Center for Distance Education. As a 9th grader she received As in Microbiology and Anatomy/Physiology which are most typically junior/senior level classes. Under the right conditions virtual education can work. If I had to bus my kids 30 minutes one way to school, I would be opting for virtual education. I would for other reasons as well (safety, quality, arbitrary rules and demands).
