Braintree cops praised for making chase and arrest – without firing a shot

BRAINTREE – As police elsewhere in the country are in the spotlight for allegedly needless shootings, seven Braintree officers are being commended for pursuing and arresting an armed robbery suspect in April without firing a shot – even after he almost struck one of them with his vehicle.

Police Chief Russell Jenkins praised the officers at Wednesday night’s town council meeting. His commendation is for the April 10 arrest of James Anthoney McLaughlin, 49, of Braintree, after a high-speed, street and highway chase from Braintree to Boston.

“It was clearly a dangerous situation,” Jenkins said. “It was not the norm for what we do.”

On Thursday, Jenkins told The Patriot ledger that detective Brian Cahoon could have fired at McLaughlin that night. When police tried to corner his Dodge Caravan near the Union Street-Route 3 rotary, Cahoon stepped from a cruiser and walked toward the Dodge with his handgun drawn.
