IndyCar boss: Boston race ready, set, go

The head of the IndyCar circuit insisted there are “no local impediments” to holding a high-speed race in Boston next year, despite the fact promoters have failed to secure approval from state agencies controlling much of the course.

“We understand the agreements are in place,” Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman Motorsports, the parent company of IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500, said yesterday in a media conference call.

Miles’ assertion flies in the face of Herald reports revealing that several agencies with jurisdiction over roads in the Seaport District have failed to reach agreements with Boston Grand Prix, the local race promoter, or approve key permits for use of their roads.

IndyCar also confirmed that Boston’s Sept. 4 race will not be the sport’s season finale, as it was billed when organizers announced plans for the event. Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh has repeatedly cited the race’s place as the “championship” event to back up his claims that the event will draw up to 250,000 spectators and bring tens of millions of dollars into the city.
