Senate research finds legalizing marijuana in Mass. won't be easy, won't be cheap

FALL RIVER — Marijuana products could be sold over the counter at stores on Main Streets and strip malls by January of 2018.

But before that happens, the state has a lot of work to do, Sen. Michael Rodrigues said.

And, after months of study, he has joined his senate colleague, Jason Lewis, in opposing the referendum set for the November ballot, asking voters if they want to make pot legal.

Rodrigues was appointed a member of the Special Senate Committee on Marijuana. That committee, led by Lewis, held 50 hearings and spent four days in Colorado, asking state leaders there what they have learned since making marijuana legal in that state.
