Bostons public libraries to get $102 million overhaul
The city’s 25 public libraries will be getting some much-needed face-lifts as part of a multimillion-dollar effort to transform them into 21st century hot spots.
Nearly $102 million will be spent on library projects over the next five years as part of the city’s long-term capital plan that Boston Public Library President David Leonard called “the largest investment in libraries by the city in decades.”
“The majority of funding is targeted toward our branches, which are in need of renovation,” he said. “Library services are being updated to be more useful for people in the 21st century.”
The city recently reopened the Jamaica Plain Branch after $10 million was spent on renovations. Upgrades included a 700-square foot addition facing South Street that will serve as a community reading lounge, multiple meeting spaces, and a refreshed collection of 30,000 items.
