Audit: Many fixes but problems still at Grand Rapids vets home
LANSING - Gov. Rick Snyder's administration has at least partially complied with all of the recommended fixes to the numerous failures at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans that led to the ouster of the director of Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency earlier this year, auditors said Friday.
Weaknesses remain, according to a report released Friday by the Michigan Auditor General as a follow-up to its scathing February report that riled lawmakers and veterans groups.
For example, auditors said in February that contracted staffers were falsifying records, reporting that they had checked on patients when they hadn't. Officials told auditors that new policies and training had been put in place, but auditors said in their follow-up report that they still found 15 instances of checks that were documented but never happened.
Auditors also noted in their follow-up report that officials still had not fully implemented proper controls over nonnarcotic medications, but officials promised further improvements.
