Legislature quietly mulling $24M in niche tax breaks during lame duck

LANSING, MI -- Michigan lawmakers this year are considering a series of niche tax exemptions and breaks for specific businesses and industries that would cost state and local governments more than $24 million.

One bill exempts "qualified sportsmen's clubs" from property taxes. Another changes how banks are taxed. One would benefit veteran's organizations, another county long-term medical care facilities.

To Lonnie Scott, executive director of progressive advocacy group Progress Michigan, the bills all look like they have one thing in common.

"These bills concentrate wealth in the hands of wealthy individuals and corporations, rather than the public sphere where everyone can benefit," Scott said.
