Former softball player sues Michigan State, Nassar for sexual abuse

IRVINE, Calif. - A former Michigan State University softball player Wednesday sued the university and former MSU doctor Larry Nassar, alleging she was sexually abused more than 10 times by Nassar.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, also lists up to 500 as yet unnamed individuals who worked for MSU at the time of the alleged misconduct as defendants.

Tiffany Lopez said in the lawsuit she was assaulted after MSU recruited her to play softball under a full athletic scholarship in the late 1990s. After she was injured, she claims Nassar sexually assaulted her more than 10 times during medical treatments for chronic back pain between the fall of 1998 and 2001.

Nassar was fired from MSU in September, in part because the school claimed he lied during an investigation into a claim by a former MSU student that he sexually assaulted her during a treatment for hip pain, but also because the university found he broke with new institutional guidelines put in place after that 2014 investigation, university officials said. Nassar served as USA Gymnastics’ team physician during four Olympic Games and is one of the figures in a nationwide scandal involving how the organization handles allegations of sexual assault. He left USA Gymnastics in fall of 2015.
