Retired state director pleads guilty to embezzling money meant for Cesar Chavez statue

LANSING - A former director of the state Hispanic/Latino Commission has admitted stealing tens of thousands of dollars of public money that was to be used for a statue honoring César Chávez.

Maria Louisa "Marylou" Mason, 82, of Williamston, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of embezzlement between $50,000 and $100,000 and agreed to pay nearly $86,000 in restitution.

The state Attorney General's Office agreed to dismiss a count of embezzlement by a public official over $50.

The embezzlement happened between October 2012 and June 2015, while Mason was executive director of the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan, according to statements in court. The current estimate of the amount missing is $85,900.
