GM to lay off about 50 workers at Brownstown battery plant

General Motors on Tuesday added about 50 employees in metro Detroit to the number of production employees who face losing their jobs.

In state filings Tuesday, GM said it will cut 50 jobs at its Brownstown battery plant at the same time it starts layoffs at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which it said in November will be idled later in 2019. The Brownstown layoffs had not been previously disclosed.

The filings said the Brownstown workers and 620 Hamtramck employees will be laid off in February.

Detroit-Hamtramck makes the Chevrolet Volt electric car with gas backup and the Buick LaCrosse. The plant will end production of the LaCrosse and Volt by March 1. About 1,550 people work at Detroit-Hamtramck.
