Teacher 'wins the right' to be paid $10/hr

Right to work scores win for teacher

Ten months and a lawsuit later, Miriam Chanski is out of her teachers union.

The Coopersville kindergarten teacher hadn’t anticipated how difficult it would be to leave the Michigan Education Association. Chanski, 25, also didn’t predict she’d become the face of Michigan teachers trying to leave the union. After all, she’s just in her second year on the job.

While relieved this battle is behind her, Chanski is concerned about the thousands of other teachers who appear to want out.

“I’m still feeling for them,” she says. “I want to spread awareness, and let them know they’re not alone.” ...

Wonder who/what was behind this effort?

Faces of Freedom: Carol Applegate

Board member: National Right to Work Committee and Public Service Research Council

An English teacher, Carol was fired in 1969 from the Grand Blanc, MI school district when she refused to join the Grand Blanc Education Association, the Michigan Education Association, and the National Education Association, and was subsequently fired (in 1969). Her court case eventually went to the Michigan Supreme Court and she returned to teaching in 1972, later retired in 1984. The ruling on her case, in June, 1988, was declared a resounding defeat for organized labor by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.

I swear to no-god-at-all, if this teacher dares to partake of the various benefits the union fights for and protects, she should be sued by the union for everything they can get their hands on.

I hope the school district has a lovely 1-on-1 negotiation time for her contract, where they give her exactly what she wants--non-union wages, non-union benefits, non-union job safety, and non-union job conditions.

Who am I kidding though. The koch-holes will be getting the book of her "courageous and heroic" (puke) story published soon enough I'm sure, and they'll find a way to make sure enough copies are bought to keep her in her little right-wing-fake-reality-bubble.

Teachers that aren't covered by the collective bargaining agreement will get their own contract, negotiated as aggressively as with the union.

She can strike, if she doesn't like what is offered.

And didn't.

When you do this to a corporation, it goes directly to collections, and no one bats an eyelash. When you do this to a union, Republicans cause hell to break loose and finance legal backing for the person. Wonder why!

Michigan has had an effective teacher's union and teacher's have enjoyed higher salaries than those in other states ... I sure as hell hope she does not benefit from the union.

In the district where I work, the union is not obliged to protect non-dues paying workers. In essence, they are on their own.
