The 2014 Distinguished Carlson Lecture featuring Condoleezza Rice coincides with Humphrey School of Public Affairs' year-long theme Keeping Faith with a Legacy of Justice, a series of several civil rights-related events the Humphrey School will host as we approach the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

More so than any single law, this legislation was responsible for hastening the demise of de jure segregation in many parts of the country. No U.S. lawmaker was more responsible for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than Hubert H. Humphrey, and he regarded its passage as a crowning achievement of his political career. During 2014, the Humphrey School and community partners will sponsor a range of activities to mark the anniversary of this critically important legislation, recommit to civil rights principles, and increase awareness of contemporary civil rights issues.

Dear Ms. Hatcher,

Hearing that Condoleezza Rice has been chosen to give the lecture of the "Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series" this year leaves me puzzled and sad. And in advertising it, you have connected it to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs' year-long theme of "Keeping Faith with a Legacy of Justice." It seems that the role that Ms. Rice had in the legacy of torture in the Bush Administration has been dismissed or forgotten.

So far the United States has not dealt with the crimes against humanity of torture, abuse, and inhuman treatment of the detainees. And so far those responsible for the torture program have been given a pass not only by society but by our universities who harbor them in teaching and lecturing.

I enjoy the lectures I attend at the University. But this lecture is a sad statement by this University, and I would hope that an appropriate distinguished person replace Ms. Rice.

The greatest friend of torture is silence. We cannot ignore this to the detriment of our morals, laws, treaties, and sense of honesty. We need to keep faith with the Legacy of Justice in our society.

Several years ago when she came for a fundraiser for Jewish Synagogue in St Louis Park, there were a lot of people who came to see here.. and we were there also outside in orange jumpsuits, black hoods, many signs and many Vets for Peace.

Please come join us. We have extra jumpsuits and hoods to lend. I have many placards that have the name of detainees and what happened to them. some have their ages and/or occupations.

We have big banners that need people to hold them up. and of course great if you want go inside and do an action. or maybe ask questions if they open it up for questions.

She sure is racking up the honors and accolades now after the (neo-con oriented) Korbel School broke the ice and set precedent of honoring her. Just read how she is being lauded by Carlson hosts in MN. If we didn't know it was the sang froid woman who told Tenet to waterboard: "Go do it, it's your baby" and lied the US into the Iraq War leading to over a million deaths, one would think Mother Teresa or MLK Jr had risen from the grave!

Just a suggestion but I think we should ask these militaristic Boards smitten with Ms. Rice to watch Sebastian Doggart's (90 minute) documentary "American Faust: Condi to Neo-Condi." At least if we write AND PUBLISH what we write, we have several e-mail addresses to now send to. If anyone writes something up that's good or with locations as to whom to complain to, I'll be happy to post on our "Tackling Torture" FB site. But I think the truth needs to go to many, many websites and public news sites. Hard news print too! The problem exists if no one complains publicly. Silence is complicity.

Perhaps Condi is gearing up for a run against Hillary?! It could happen! They have slightly different colors and party affiliations but otherwise they are exactly the SAME!

If you live in the Twin Cities, please come help us hold signs that torture is wrong when Condi Rice speaks about how she brought democracy and human rights to the Mid-east through illegal wars, waterboarding and indefinite detention on Guantanamo. How could the Dean of the Humphrey Institute Eric Schwartz invite Rice to speak at the University of Minnesota as a human rights champion when she convened the "White House Principals" who planned and ordered various CIA tortures?! Recently Rutgers faculty voted to disinvite Rice to speak on their campus.



I hope more groups join this protest. I hope some law student organizations join.

A number of biographers, historians and other administration officials such as Richard Clarke and Lawrence Wilkerson who were first hand witnesses, as well as Rice's former Univ of Denver professor Alan Gilbert provide a very complete and credible account of how this most powerful woman committed serious war crimes.
