Please spread the word and attend.

Through negotiations and persistence and the good will of all, Phil and Jim have worked with Beth El Synagogue and obtained a weekend (5/18-20)in residence of a Torah Scholar, Rabbi Kahn-Troster, on the issue of human rights and torture.

The issues will be addressed from religious, legal, medical, ethical and practical perspectives.

Barbara Frey (Director of the Human Rights Program in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota and former Executive Director of Advocates For Human Rights)
and
Dr. Steven Miles (Professor and Maas Family Endowed Chair in Bioethics, Center for Bioethics, University of Minnesota Medical School).
There will also be a
video presentation by Matthew Alexander, an experienced interrogator, who was involved in interrogations of high value detainees and who opposes the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques".

Phil and I have worked with Rabbi Olitzky to plan A Stillman Torah-Scholar-In Residence weekend at Beth El for May 18-20.

It will be led by Rabbi Rachel Kahn-Troster, Director of Rabbis for Human Rights North, and is entitled "Created in the Image of God: A Jewish Imperative for Human Rights".

There will be services and presentations on Friday evening and Saturday morning led by Rabbi Kahn-Troster and a presentation on Sunday entitled "Honoring the Image of God: Reviewing Torture Jewishly".

Along with Rabbi Kahn-Troster the participants in the Sunday presentation will be Barbara Frey (Director of the Human Rights Program in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota and former Executive Director of Advocates For Human Rights) and Dr. Steven Miles (Professor and Maas Family Endowed Chair in Bioethics, Center for Bioethics, University of Minnesota Medical School).

The issues will be addressed from religious, legal, medical, ethical and practical perspectives. There will also be a video presentation by Matthew Alexander, an experienced interrogator, who was involved in interrogations of high value detainees and who opposes the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques".

So far we have arranged publicity in the Beth El Synagogue Shofar, American Jewish World, and Minneapolis StarTribune.

The specific details are also available at WWW.BETHELSYNAGOGUE.ORG. Members of the public are welcome at all of the events. It will be most helpful if you will assist with publicizing it to other organizations and individuals as you see fit.

Thank you for your assistance in advocating for these events and for your patience in awaiting additional information from us.
