University of Southern Mississippi continues investigation of SAE fraternity

The University of Southern Mississippi's Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity remains under investigation for allegations of individual and organizational misconduct related to a homecoming party, but university officials have recommended that members be allowed to stay in their campus fraternity house.

The approximately 30 members of the Mississippi Sigma Chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon were notified at the end of November by the Office of the Dean of Students that they must vacate their fraternity house by the conclusion of fall semester pending an investigation of several violations of the Code of Student Conduct. The university's chapter had been suspended since an investigation got underway following an Oct. 29 party at the frat house.

Tom Burke, vice president for student affairs and vice provost, said the university is continuing to follow its processes for addressing allegations of misconduct in regard to the chapter.

"The University is specifically addressing allegations related to violations of the University's Alcohol and Drug Policy and incidents of vandalism within the fraternity house," he said in a written statement. "The University is not ruling out the addressing of other violations of the Code or other policies that might be discovered during the course of the continuing investigation. At this time, no criminal charges have resulted from the University Police Department's investigation."
