Mississippi's anti-'sanctuary cities' bill passes
The Senate on Tuesday passed an "anti-sanctuary cities" bill on to Gov. Phil Bryant, who is expected to sign the measure into law.
The Senate approved Senate Bill 2710 by a vote of 36-11 after the House had made minor changes. It would prohibit local governments and universities from enacting ordinances or policies that would limit enforcement of or cooperation with federal and state immigration laws and enforcement. It says local Mississippi governments and universities and colleges can't prohibit employees or law enforcement from checking someone's immigration status and that no Mississippi government or agency can give legal status to someone in the country illegally.
Bryant has long been a supporter of cracking down on illegal immigration, since his previous terms as state auditor and lieutenant governor, and said he looks forward to signing the bill into law.
"Taxpayers expect their state and its political subdivisions to abide by federal immigration laws," Bryant said in a written statement. "I appreciate the Legislature's work on Senate Bill 2710."
