Related: About this forumWhat's the best re-build Joplin Charity?
A dear friend's son (27) was killed by a drunk driver last week and they are asking for donations to rebuild Joplin because that was his son, Seneca Black Elk Mathews', passion. He took his vacation to help rescue and recover people and devoted many weekends to the endeavor. I want the money to go to a legitimate charity for this cause. Can you help? Thanks.

(38,958 posts)you could contact the local newspaper or perhaps something for one of the libraries or schools there would be good. I suspect that anything would be greatly appreciated by any group in the area.

(12,253 posts)Those are great suggestions. Just after I posted, Seneca's dad, my good friend for over 30 years, just called to say that they had decided to build a trust fund and establish a self-perpetuating scholarship in Seneca's name. He was well loved; thirteen hundred people attended his memorial. I haven's sent a check to Joplin for a while so thanks for reminding me that they still need help and that I'm overdue.

(29,673 posts)As to Joplin itself-there are so many areas that need help. Contact any school, medical center, senior center, even libraries-they all need help.

(12,253 posts)After such devastation, I'm not surprised to know how much help is needed. I'm drawn toward the libraries and will do that research tomorrow. There was an enormous feast to celebrate Seneca yesterday, all done to tradition. Take care.

(29,673 posts)Most are desperately underfunded and in a case like this what they already had might be lost.
I donate books to my public library regularly and we didn't have a natural disaster. Think about a place that did have one-how much of their catalogue was lost? Just makes sense to find some more info about it.
And I know there's a whole lot of dislike for churches here on DU but another thought is to contact one in the area (one that you're comfortable with) and ask them what they think is still needed for the town. Many of them are still dealing directly with the peoples wants and needs and would have a good idea of who needs your donation.
And the feast sounds wonderful! What a great way to honor a life!

(12,253 posts)For the Joplin Schools Tornado Relief Fund. I'm sure Seneca would approve. Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions. If I get rich, I'll send more!
