USPS to close mail processing/distribution centers in Cape Girardeau and Springfield

Postal Service will close Cape Girardeau, Springfield centers

The U.S. Postal Service plans to cut costs by closing its mail processing and distribution centers in Springfield and Cape Girardeau, losing 136 positions.

Richard Watkins, spokesman for regional office of the Postal Service, said Thursday that work at the Springfield facility will move to the Kansas City distribution center. Work at the Cape Girardeau center will move to a site in downtown St. Louis.

No date had been set, but the closings would not take effect before May 15.

He said the Springfield closing would mean a loss of 65 positions, and the Cape Girardeau closing would cost 71 positions. Some transfer opportunities will be available.

I would think Springfield wouldn't be as bad (though a post office job would be decent pay compared to other jobs) but can Cape Girardeau actually handle the closing?

Times are tough as it is. I feel bad for any town that loses decent jobs.
