Springfield Public Schools still paying off bond-funded projects in schools that may be closed

Nearly 11 years ago, Springfield voters approved a bond issue to air-condition a K-8 school building that will likely be torn down and rebuilt if the April 4 bond issue passes.

The $3.4 million project at Pershing Elementary and Middle School may not be fully paid off until 2026.

"Those are buildings that are going to be abandoned that we're still paying for and that we've done updates to," said Ralph Plank, a former Springfield school board member who helped to form the bond opposition group, Save R-12 Schools. "To me, that seems very wasteful and a poor use of tax money."

He added: "I think that should be a concern to everybody."
