Local organization brings awareness to human trafficking

JEFFERSON CITY — On Tuesday, nationwide awareness was brought to a major problem that is international but also local: human trafficking.

Matthew Huffman, public affairs director for the Missouri coalition against domestic and sexual violence, said Missouri is an attractive place for traffickers.

Although human trafficking has been identified as a major problem, Huffman said the full extent to the problem is actually unknown.

According to Huffman, there are two types of trafficking: sex trafficking and labor trafficking, a form of modern day slavery. He said anyone can become a victim of human trafficking, especially vulnerable individuals such as youths, who became more vulnerable during the pandemic.
