Nevada lawmakers probe teacher pay raises amid renewed questions about school funding

Republican state lawmakers are worried Gov. Steve Sisolak’s proposed teacher pay hikes won’t actually make it into teachers’ pockets.

A pair of legislators on Tuesday grilled Nevada Department of Education officials over the $180 million salary boost included in Sisolak’s budget.

At issue is the way the wage increases are budgeted in the distributive school account, the state’s main education fund.

Dollars funneled through that account are subject to school district-level union negotiations, which means they could be siphoned off to pay for additional administrators or consultants instead of rank-and-file teachers.
