State education boss Edelblut donated to Croydon's legal fight with department

CROYDON — The Croydon School Board is declining to identify anonymous donors to a lawsuit versus the state Department of Education that challenged the town’s right to send taxpayer money to support students who attend non-public schools

But new Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut revealed Wednesday night that he was one of those anonymous donors that collectively gave more than 75 percent of the $23,000 in checks in support of the education choice matter.

“I contributed $1,000 to the Croydon legal defense fund,” Edelblut wrote in an e-mail to Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky, D-Concord, who had called upon Edelblut to defend his reasoning for declining comment when the Valley News first asked about the controversy.

“The contribution was made anonymously. I prefer the focus to stay on the cause and not draw attention to myself,” Edelblut said.
