Morristown doctor found guilty in $30 million Medicare, Medicaid fraud

A doctor from Morristown was found guilty on charges related to a $30 million Medicare and Medicaid scheme, authorities said on Thursday.

Paul Mathieu, 53, posed as the owner of three medical clinics in Brooklyn for six years while billing Medicare and Medicaid about $30 million for services and supplies that were either unnecessary or not provided, according to U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman. The scheme went on from 2007 to 2013 and Mathieu posed as the owner to meet a New York law that clinics must be owned by a medical professional.

Mathieu made appearances at the clinics, signing fake medical charts and giving expensive referrals, according to Berman. He did not directly treat any patients despite signing forms stating he did.

He also wrote unneeded prescriptions for adult diapers filled at a company owned by a co-conspirator's wife.
