Atlantic City loses its football team one year after it got it as AFL goes bankrupt
If you were a fan of the Atlantic City Blackjacks, you’re out of luck.
The Arena Football League (AFL) announced Wednesday it was completely ceasing operations after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
The filing comes nearly a month after the league suspended local business operations. The AFL was facing several challenges, including a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against the league by an insurance carrier that provided workers compensation coverage between 2009 and 2012.
In 2019, the Blackjacks were among five other AFL teams competing in the league. Other teams that ceased operations due to the league’s situation include the three-time Arena Bowl Champion Philadelphia Soul, 2019 Arena Bowl Champion Albany Empire, Baltimore Brigade, Columbus Destroyers, and Washington Valor. In its expansion season, the Blackjacks finished fifth in the AFL with a 4-8 record, one spot away from a playoff berth.
