'That's a stupid religion:' Lawsuit claims Pizza Hut boss discriminated

SOUTH PLAINFIELD — A Pizza Hut manager subjected three Egyptian-American workers to multiple acts of discrimination, according to a federal lawsuit.

The suit, filed in September, says Karen Ryan took over as area manager in January 2015, overseeing Pizza Hut restaurants in Edison and South Plainfield.

She referred to Joseph Hafez, general manager of the Edison store, and employee Ahmed Ahmed, general manager of the South Plainfield store, as "brothers" because they are both Egyptian, the suit said.

Ryan also made discriminatory remarks toward Hispanic workers.

the public will find out what was said. If Ryan used limiting negative stereotypes against Hafez and Ahmed, and against Hispanic workers prior to that, someone higher up in the Pizza Hut chain is going to have to evaluate her future as a manager of one of the company's franchise pizza joints.

Attorneys for Hafez and Ahmed might suggest, if the information so corroborates, that there is no record of either of those men using dismissive or derogatory ethnic slurs in the workplace, that they treated co-workers and colleagues with dignity and respect, and that they have a right to expect the same in return. Their hard work and dedication to task is not worth less than Ryan's for the same company, and their personal dignity should be paramount in the company's consideration.
