Voters approve $100M bond in Santa Fe ISD election that drew near-record numbers

In what amounted to a near-record turnout for typically sleepy school-board elections, voters on Tuesday approved a $100 million bond issue to help Santa Fe Public Schools update, renovate and build facilities.

Voters also selected retired cultural anthropologist George Gamble for a six-year term on Santa Fe Community College’s five-member governing board, ousting incumbent Pablo Sedillo Sr. by a margin of more than 800 votes.

Some 8,300 people cast ballots — nearly ten percent of all eligible voters and double the percentage of participants in the last school election four years ago. School board elections generally draw about five percent of eligible voters.

The two open seats on the Santa Fe school board will be filled by women who ran unopposed: incumbent Lorraine Price, a retired educator, and board newcomer Kate Noble, head of community development for a local tech startup.
