I came through there driving cross-country from Boston in a VW Van with my girlfriend at the time. She was a painter who had correspondence with O'Keeffe. We stopped briefly at Georgia's house in Abiquiu, but O'Keeffe was sick and her constant companion, Juan, wouldn't let us stay long.

I recall that New Mexico had more spirits per square mile than any other place I've ever been. Santa Cruz, CA which is where we ended up for a while, came close.

Nice country. Good times. Beautiful places and people.

Probably the best and most accurate nickname for a state. Best sunsets in the US, wonderful mountains, mesas, and deserts and in-between (only thing it lacks is an ocean)- mild weather (compared to most places). And you can't beat the blend of cultures. No where else in the US do you have people of such diversity, living pretty well together. Sure, some tensions all around but overall- great tolerance and appreciation. Been to all 50 states and want to be no where else.

I had planned to move there at one time, but got "stuck" in the shrub-stepped of eastern Washington...not too shabby itself.

My friends who have been to NM and frequent do say it's a magical place. Hope to see it for myself one day!

My wife and I had the good fortune and blessing to live in Santa Fe for a number of years, until family reasons (and, in hindsight, some half-baked planning and decision-making) took us away. We very much want to move back someday. There is a different feel there than anywhere else, and you can't beat the combination of cultures, landscape, sunsets, weather, and food. A day without green chile really is a day without sunshine. And now that I'm thinking about it, I need a Plaza Porter.

By the way, in your OP, where are the churches in the first and last photos?

... I think that little church with the red roof is south of town on the Old Las Vegas Highway, just before it turns into a private road.

Wait, let me check Google Maps..... LOL

Yep, that's it! Here's another photo (not mine -- wish I'd taken one when I was right there next to it): http://www.panoramio.com/photo/60720779

Still live in NM, Steerpike?

He's lived in Santa Fe most his life and just looks so happy and fit! I live in Alaska now and do a great impersonation of Orson Welles...
