New Mexico's recreational marijuana law takes effect Tuesday

New Mexico's new law that allows for the legalization of recreational marijuana goes into effect June 29. However, dispensaries will not be allowed to immediately start selling marijuana for recreational use.

"It's important to know there's no place to buy it here. But certainly, it's not going to be illegal to possess it," explained Linda Trujillo, superintendent for the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, which will oversee the new cannabis industry.

Here's what will be allowed starting June 29:

Possession of up to 2 oz. of cannabis per adult 21 and older
Consumption except for in public spaces
Growing plants for personal use (6 per person, 12 household)

The first sales are expected to begin by the spring of 2022. "We've been given a deadline of no later than April 1," Trujillo said. "I've shared with folks that we'll do our best to move that date as far forward as we can. But at this point, there's so many different moving pieces that I can't give any kind of an estimate."

For almost a year we could possess, consume, grow and gift cannabis, but we couldn''t legally buy either cannabis products or seed.

Lots of plants were started through immaculate inception.

It was all due to the staggering levels of regulation they imposed on commercial growing, transport, and retail sales. Keep in mind that medical dispensaries already existed. The delays were exclusively on the rec side.

Frankly, even at $400/oz, I don't see how any money is being made. Everything has a regulation, from criminal background checks and drug screening for employees, to security cameras, to staffing levels, to training, to storage and seed to sale tracking requirements, and of course testing for both quality and contaminants.
