Dems hit Astorino on housing dispute with feds

Casey Seiler, Capitol bureau chief

The state Democratic Committee is out with two ads hitting Republican Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino for his failure to abide by the terms of a 2009 agreement that settled a 2006 lawsuit over what federal officials said was years in which the county misrepresented its efforts to provide desegretated public housing.

The New York World took a comprehensive look at the pitched battle between Westchester’s leadership and the feds — a fight that has already cost the county millions in housing dollars — last month.

It’s worth noting that the original suit and federal rebuke concerned the county’s actions under former County Executive Andrew Spano, who Astorino’s opponent, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, just appointed to the state Board of Elections.

The party says both ads will begin airing today.

1. Astorino Closing In On A Running Mate

May 2014

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino says he is closing in on picking a running mate to round out the statewide GOP ticket this fall, he said in a radio interview this morning.

“We are certainly in the final stages of this, and I’ve been looking over records and going in for discussions,” Astorino told Fred Dicker on his Talk-1300 show. “So I think that’s going to be narrowed down real quick, and somebody will be picked.”

Astorino didn’t get into specifics, but various names have surfaced as a potential lieutenant governor candidate for the Republicans, including Assemblywoman Jane Corwin and Assemblywoman Nicol Malliotakis, both of whom have publicly said they are not interested in the job.
