GMO bill passes Assembly committee, ready for floor vote
By Richard Moody
A bill that would require the labeling of genetically engineered foods is on the move in the New York state Assembly.
The GMO bill (A.3525), which is a legislative priority of many New York environmental groups such as Environmental Advocates of New York and the New York Green Party, passed through the Assembly Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protections Tuesday where it was defeated last year. There is no same-as bill in the Senate.
"After months of hard work and despite the best efforts of lobbyists for the industry whose goal it was to 'kill this bill in committee,' I am pleased that my GMO bill was successfully reported out of the Committee on Consumer Affairs," sponsor of the bill, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, said. "The vast majority of New Yorkers want to know what is in the food that they feed to their families. New York state is one step closer to making mandatory GMO labeling a reality."
