NRC: Indian Point needs more earthquake evaluation

Michael Risinit, TJN

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants the owner of the Indian Point nuclear power plant to take a harder look at how prepared the facility is to withstand an earthquake.

In a letter sent Friday, the NRC lists Indian Point units 2 and 3 among 10 plants in the eastern two-thirds of the country that have the highest need to perform such evaluations. The grouping isn't a risk ranking, a NRC spokesman said, but a reflection of better technology used to evaluate seismic hazards.

"Consequently, plants in this group will benefit most from a more detailed seismic risk analysis and will have priority when it comes to seismic risk expertise," NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said. "The NRC continues to have confidence that plants can operate safely while more analyses are performed."
