The head of the states anti-smoking efforts told lawmakers this morning theres no convincing evidence that e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems so-called ENDS are helping cut the states smoking rate.
We know that the
devices are being used at a much higher rate, but the quit rate for smoking isnt changing, Harlan Juster, director of the state Bureau of Tobacco Control, told the Senate Health Committee.
He cited one study that found about 6.8 percent success rate among smokers using e-cigarettes to quit, compared to about 5.8 percent for those that used the nicotine patch a difference that he said was not statistically significant.
We are certain that more research is needed, he said, but to date no study has shown that quitting is enhanced by ENDS use.
